We have recently moved our worm farm and box garden in preparation for our Christmas extension. The children loved being involved in the project.

Worm eggs again
Do you remember Lucca’s experiment in May to find out how long worms took to hatch? Well today is the first day in July. We didn’t think they had hatched and Anna was tipping the eggs back into the worm farm when she noticed some tiny worms at the very bottom of the container.

We looked at them under the microscope. We could see the soil inside their tummy.

Worm eggs

Lucca and Oli put on garden gloves so they can investigate the worm farm. One glove has an L on for the left hand and one has R for the right hand. Its quite tricky to put gloves on, but it is worth it! Exploring the worm farm is fun and its important not to touch the worms with our skin because we can hurt their very delicate skin. They breathe through their skin and it must stay moist. Anna points out the worm eggs and asks, “I wonder how we can find out what a worm looks like when it comes out of the egg?”

Lucca immediately suggests, “We could put them in a container” So that’s what they do. Lucca makes a cover for the container so it starts cool and dark for the eggs. Then Lucca asks “How long will it be before the worms come out of the egg?” So he and Anna look it up and find out it will take two to three weeks.

Lucca and Oli are very interested in the worm farm and we can continue to extend this. They are curious about the world around them and are confident to ask questions and to come up with hypotheses about how to find out more.

Making our own Earth Scrub cream cleaner
Today we make our own cream cleaner.
This is what we have to do:
· Mix 1 and two thirds cups baking soda with half a cup of liquid castile soap
· Add half a cup of water
· Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar last.
· Stir until all lumps are gone
· We spooned the mix into a tub so we could get some on a cloth when we needed it
This recipe is from a book called ‘Clean house, clean planet’ by Karen Logan
